Why Dentists Don’t Want to Tell You This Easy Way to Fight Cavities with Coconut Oil at Home

Unfortunately, even in the 21st century, oral hygiene is still a major issue and a lot of people don’t realize the importance of preventing bad breath and yellowish teeth, as well as tartar, cavities, and sores. However, very often, there are situations when toothpastes and mouthwashes aren’t enough. When this happens, you should definitely turn to alternative medicine.

The Power of Coconut Oil

According to a study from 2012 done by the Athlone Institute of Technology, enzyme-modified coconut oil is able to suppress harmful bacteria. The study also pointed out that this type of coconut oil was highly beneficial in eliminating streptococcus, Candida, and Strep mutans, known causers of oral health problems.

Damien Brady, doctor and head of the research, stated that making coconut oil a part of dental hygiene products is a great alternative for chemical additives. Nevertheless, since the study hasn’t yet reached a conclusive level that would enable its addition to health products, people continue using coconut oil as mouthwash. Even though unaltered oil might not be as potent as the enzyme-modified one, it’s still very beneficial and has no side effects.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is a practice of swishing a tbsp of coconut oil in the mouth cavity for 10 to 20 minutes. The aim is pull out as many bacteria as possible from the mouth into the oil. After the 20 minutes, the oil needs to be spit. Coconut oil contains lauric acid which is beneficial in killing harmful bacteria. When you spit the oil, spit it into a trashcan not in the sink since it could go back to solid form and clog the pipes. At the end, rinse the mouth thoroughly.

Important to Note:

Oil pulling is not a replacement for regular tooth brushing.
